A Scarborough schoolgirl has auditioned for hit TV show Britain’s Got Talent after being spotted on YouTube.

Twelve-year-old Emmie Beckitt was scouted when producers saw her online singing Nessum Dorma.

Emmie’s mum received a call saying her daughter had been placed on a short list from tens of thousands of performers who had impressed producers.

They asked if Emmie come down to Birmingham and audition in front of the celebrity judges, including Simon Cowell.

On the day, the youngster was kept busy prior to the audition with interviews, filming and photo shoots.

She spent time backstage with presenters Ant and Dec, who she says told her jokes and tried to help her stay calm and relaxed.

When Emmie was called out onstage, she had a quick chat with Simon, and launched into her performance of Nessun Dorma.

Simon put his hand up, saying the backing track sounded poor and asked if Emmie had another song. The youngster then sang “Time to Say Goodbye”, to great applause from the audience.

David Walliams said in a few years Emmie will be “our next Katherine Jenkins” and Alesha Dixon said Emmie had “a lovely quality to such a young voice”.

Sadly Emmie did not get through, but Simon said he’s like to see her back again next year.

Emmie said: “I loved the day - the producers were so kind to me. I got to meet and spend time with my idols Ant and Dec and I did feel privileged to have been scouted off YouTube.”

The youngster added: “I would love to do it next year. I have a new singing coach now Susan Hartly from Scarborough and my vocals are getting stronger.

“In the meantime I will keep enjoying my charity performances and singing with the junior, senior and chamber choirs in the St Augustine’s concerts and events.”

Oliver Barron, music teacher at St Augustine’s School, said: “The music department is so proud of Emmie and believes that with the commitment she has shown towards singing since joining the school that she will definitely be one to watch in the very near future.”

The popular talent show, which features singers, dancers and entertainers of all kinds, will go to air on ITV1 in the Spring.
