Mutton on menu for Prince's visit

FARMERS across the North York Moors will roll out the red carpet tomorrow to welcome Prince Charles.

The Prince of Wales will tour farms at Spaunton and Levisham, near Pickering, as part of his Business in the Community “Seeing is Believing” initiative to look at ways in which businesses can help hard-pressed hill farmers.

The visit was due to have taken place last September, following his tour of the Rotunda Museum and St Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough, but had to be postponed after an outbreak of foot and mouth in Surrey.

Prince Charles will tour Hill Top Farm in Spaunton with business leaders from across the country and join delegates and local farmers for a discussion on opportunities to help sustain hill farming.

From there he will travel to Tim Wilson’s Grange Farm at Levisham, home to the successful Ginger Pig brand of free range pork, lamb and beef. His company has shops in London and Pickering.

He will meet supporters of the Mutton Renaissance Campaign, of which he is the founder and patron, and delegates will then have a lunch of mutton stew, cooked by a chef from the Academy of Culinary Arts.

Mutton – meat from two-year-old ewes – fell out of favour in recent decades resulting in sheep farmers struggling to get a decent price for their ewes. The Prince founded the campaign to repopularise it and boost incomes on family farms.

The visit to Grange Farm is aimed at showcasing the environmental benefits of sheep farming in upland Britain.
