Jimmy Savile’s headstone at Woodlands Cemetery was dismantled today amidst allegations he sexually abused girls.

The headstone will be taken down, at the request of the family, by the undertaker who dealt with Savile’s funeral last November.

Robert Morphet, of Joseph A.Hey and Sons of Bradford, said: “The unprecedented removal of a memorial in this way is being carried out early to respect other families who may be visiting relatives’ graves during the day.

“We would like to reassure people that the process will be carried out as quietly as possible, in a businesslike way, with respect to others using the cemetery.”

A statement has been released which reads: “Members of the family of Sir Jimmy Savile have decided to remove his headstone from the grave in Scarborough, a source close to the family has revealed.

“The family members are deeply aware of the impact that the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery.
“Out of respect to public opinion, to those who are buried there, and to those who tend their graves and visit there, we have decided to remove it.”
