Secrets of WWI archive papers

The stories of men from the North Riding who appealed against conscription in the First World War are being revealed with the opening of a rare archive by North Yorkshire County Record Office.

Members of the public are being invited to volunteer to work on the project to help to uncover these hidden tales and learn what happened to the men.

The County Record Office has been awarded £8,500 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its project, Grounds for Appeal: the North Riding Appeal Tribunal Papers 1916-1918.

Funded by HLF’s First World War: Then and Now programme, the project will explore and open up access to the North Riding military tribunals’ appeals records 1916-1918. Thousands of men appealed against conscription on economic, employment, medical or conscientious grounds.

Most Popular

County councillor Chris Metcalfe said: “This is an important archive, which will reveal the many issues that led men to appeal against conscription during the First World War in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable us to open up this fascinating archive to everyone.”
