Police are investigating a crash near Kirkbymoorside

POLICE are today appealing for witnesses after two motorcyclists were injured in a collision in Kirkbymoorside.

The riders were airlifted to hospital this morning following the incident.

Police were called just after 10.30am following reports that the bikes had collided with a black Toyota RAV four-wheel drive at the junction of the A170 and the right-hand turn-off to Appleton-le-Moors.

All three vehicles were travelling in the same direction on the A170 towards Kirkbymoorside.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said one motorcyclist, a man in his fifties from the Harrogate area, was airlifted to hospital with leg and chest injuries, the second rider, a man in his forties from Halifax, was airlifted to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

She added: “Although their injuries are serious, they are not believed to be life-threatening.”

The driver of the Toyota, a woman from the Humberside area was physically uninjured.

The road was closed and reopened at 12pm after the casualties and the vehicles were recovered.

The bikers were part of a group of four motorcyclists travelling together and police are appealing for anyone who saw the bikes or Toyota RAV 4x4 travelling along the A170 prior to the collision, or anyone who witnessed the actual collision to contact them.

Anyone with any information should call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for TC Dan Hughes at Scarborough Roads Policing Group.

One rider was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough and the other to Leeds General Infirmary.
