Four fire engines tackled a fire at a Scarborough home before the firefighters found more than they bargained for.

A blaze broke out at an address in Nelson Street just after 3.30pm today.

Four engines from Scarborough and Filey were called and the fire was extinguished just before 4pm.

It was then that police were called to the scene.

The Scarborough News understands that cannabis plants were found in the property by the fire crew.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “O Firefighters alerted police officers to a house on Nelson Street in Scarborough at 3.57pm on Tuesday (after they put out a fire at a suspected cannabis grow in a loft.

“A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident as enquiries continue at the scene.

“Anyone with information that could assist the police should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and ask for the Force Control Room.
