A coffee thief must pay £3 compensation for pinching coffee from a Scarborough store.

Jason Watson, 38, of Grosvenor Crescent, pleaded guilty to one count of theft at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on February 9.

Prosecuting, Katy Varlow, told the court that it was a straight forward theft of Nescafe coffee from Sainsbury’s on Ramshill Road on September 29 last year.

The court heard that Watson was subject to two community orders.

Robert Vining, defending, said: “He is pulling himself together. He is now receiving help in order to get himself into work. It is £3 worth of coffee. He was stood talking to acquaintances outside the store after taking it. He didn’t run away.”

Mr Barnett, chairman of the bench, urged Watson to have some “common sense” and handed him an absolute discharge and ordered him to pay £3 in compensation.
