A SCARBOROUGH Freemasons Lodge has shown its benevolence after making a charity donation.

The St Nicholas Freemasons Lodge has put forward £500 for The Myriame Fund, which helps disadvantaged youngsters in Madagascar.

The money will help provide food for 20 children for the next three months.

Lodge publicity officer Peter Moss said: “Following a visit to Madagascar in the late 1980s, Rev Michael Mewis and his wife Pauline began sending money to a friend they had made there.

“This was Myriame Ramahandradona, who uses the money to help poor families in her immediate vicinity.

“Lately there has been a surge in the number of street children who have needed feeding as parents either die or abandon their offspring as the financial crisis bites even deeper.

“Other Freemason Lodges in Scarborough and elsewhere have donated monies which help to alleviate hunger.

“All money donated is forwarded directly to Myriame’s bank account without any deductions for expenses.”

Mr Moss added Rev Mewis had thanked everyone for the kind donation.
