A youth homeless charity is encouraging Scarborough people to take part in a fundraising “sleepout” to help them meet a challenging £10,000 target.

The event, organised by SASH, will take place at St James Church in Seamer Road on Friday March 6.

It will start at 7pm with a community concert in the church with performances by the Hatton School of Dance, Saxon the Beach, groups from the Scarborough Music Centre, The Singing Vicars and Scarborough Concert Band. The concert is free but donations to SASH will be gratefully received.

A soup supper will be held in the church hall from 9.30pm and sleepout participants will set up their pitches in the church grounds from 10pm.

There will be an informal gathering around 11pm to focus on what people are doing and why, then everyone will settle down for the night.

The site will be patrolled by safety stewards all night and there will be an indoor facility for toilets, hot drinks, first aid and drying out if necessary.

At 6am team members will bring round hot drinks and at 7am a free breakfast will be provided for participants in the Cockleshell Café (others by donation), bringing the event to a close.

SASH helps prevent young people from becoming homeless by offering accommodation in the homes of local volunteers through an emergency service known as “Nightstop”.

Volunteer hosts give up their spare room to offer a safe place to stay at night for 16-25 year olds with nowhere to go, along with an evening meal and breakfast the next day.

The SASH sleepouts see local people raise money in sponsorship to spend a night sleeping outside with just a sleeping bag and cardboard box for shelter.

In 2014 in Scarborough and Bridlington it offered 468 nights of emergency accommodation to 110 young people who would otherwise have had nowhere safe to stay. A third were just 16 or 17 years old.

Sarah Ware, community co-ordinator at SASH says: “If you want to help make a real difference to some of the most vulnerable young people in your local community, sign up and start fundraising for the Scarborough Sleepout. You will be helping to raise vital funds for our Nightstop projects over the coming year.”
