A WEEK-LONG programme of events in Scarborough to celebrate the town’s third Armed Forces Day begins today.

The proceedings will start with a Flying the Flag ceremony in the Town Hall Gardens to be attended by veterans, schoolchildren and VIPs at 10.30am today. There will also be special visits into schools throughout the week by members of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help.

Displays by The Blades aeronautical team and a Lancaster Bomber are the highlights of Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

Scarborough is the only place in the country where the Lancaster Bomber, which performed an important role in the celebrations to mark the recent Royal wedding, will be doing an air display on Armed Forces Day, organisers of the event have revealed

It is due to begin its 15-minute display on Saturday over the South Bay at either 1.55pm or 2.10pm, depending on other commitments.

The day will also see a veterans’ parade, air-sea rescue demonstration involving HMS Explorer, the RAF and RNLI and a host of stalls, events and activities on the seafront.

The week of events to celebrate the military will draw to a close on Sunday with a spectacular musical tribute to the Royal British Legion in its 90th year by the Scarborough Spa Orchestra in the Spa Grand Hall, complete with a poignant red poppy drop.
