Three Scarborough petrol heads are gearing up for the drive of their lives - a journey to France in a £250 old banger.
Donning sombreros, ponchos and dodgy fake moustaches, ‘The Three Amigos’ are taking on the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.
Annabel Fleming (aka Carmen), 42, her stepdad, Peter Muirhead (Pedro), 62, and family friend Stephen Oxtoby (Alfonzo), 57, will set off in a 13-year-old red Mitsubishi Carisma on July 10, with the aim of making it to Monte Carlo four days later.
Miss Fleming said: “My stepdad goes to a lot of car rallies around the world but has ever participated in one. He said he had nowhere to go this year and I said why don’t we do a rally? It started off as a bit of fun but then we decided we might as well do it for a reason and try to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice.
“Now we have got so many sponsors, it’s brilliant. Everybody is being really generous, trying to give as much money as possible to the charity.”
The intrepid trio will cover five countries in three days, taking in Zeebrugge in Belgium, Saint Quentin and Dijon in France, over the Alps in Switzerland, Lake Geneva and Turin in Italy before arriving at Monte Carlo on July 14. Their trip will culminate in a jaunt around the Monaco F1 circuit followed by celebrations with more than 100 participating cars in Nice on Bastille Day.
Miss Fleming said: “The car is Steve’s, he was going to bin it because it was in a bad way. There’s a possibility we might break down but I’m hoping the two guys know what they are doing.
“I’m a real petrol head, I love cars, but I have never done anything like this before.”
The car now is ready to go on display at a number of events and locations this summer in an effort to raise further funds for St Catherine’s.
The team’s packed itinerary includes Proudfoots Supermarket, in Newby, on Saturday, Easington Show on June 15, Scarborough town centre on June 22 and Staxtonbury music festival on July 6.
Miss Fleming said: “We are going to be armed with collection buckets, raising awareness for St Catherine’s Hospice.
“The main reason we chose the charity is three family friends have been looked after there over the years.”
