A man died, and another was injured, after their car veered off the road, ploughed through a fence and came to rest in a garden.

The driver, who was in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, near the Black Bull Inn on the A169 Malton Road near Pickering.

A second man in his 20s, believed to be the passenger, was treated at hospital for non-life threatening injuries after the crash around 9.50pm last night. Both men are from Ryedale.

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses who may have seen the accident or the blue Mini Cooper the men were in shortly before the crash.

Officers are particularly keen to trace the driver of a small, green vehicle who stopped nearby and may have witnessed the collision.
