FRIENDS of a special Scarborough lady whipped up a sweet treat for her 99th birthday.

Following a church service at St Mary’s in Cloughton, Kath Sutcliffe, of Burniston, was surprised to hear “Happy Birthday” being played by an ice cream van outside.

She was brought out to receive her birthday surprise – and enjoyed tucking into a 99 ice cream with her friends.

It was all arranged by Reverend Liz Kitching, who said: “Kath is one of our regulars and a great supporter of the church.

“She’s a smashing lady, so we wanted to mark her birthday by doing something special.”

Rev Kitching contacted Angie Mason of Angie’s Ice Cream, who was more than happy to oblige.

She said: “After all the guests were served a 99 ice cream, Kath was invited into our van to make her very own fresh ice cream.

“She had a ball, after serving some ice creams, she posed for photos in the driver’s seat.”

Angie added that it was a very special day, which stood out among all the events she has attended.

Rev Kitching said that Kath had a great day and was both “touched and overwhelmed” with the surprise. The day was also blessed with sunshine.
