A new Scarborough fundraising group which launched just a month ago has already raised £1,000 for a good cause.

Our Co - which stands for Our Community - started on April 4 and is a group of like-minded people who aim to raise cash for local charities.

Currently situated at 79 Falsgrave Road, the shop will move to different premises when the property is let to permanent tenants.

In the meantime, the group plans to create pop-up shops, helping to regenerate empty properties in Scarborough.

Spokesperson Veronica Thorpe says: “It’s exciting to be given the opportunity to make a difference for local charities and local people.

“Moving the fundraising hub around to different venues as and when properties become available means we can incorporate fresh ideas, get to meet different people and also give empty properties a new lease of life.”

The first donation of £1,000 has now been made to The Cambridge Centre in aid of Newburn House, which offers supportive accommodation to six local individuals and address issues of homelessness, substance misuse, mental ill health and offending.

The group will be given Sainsbury’s vouchers which will be used to support the budgeting and healthy meals. Some of the vouchers will be spent on healthy snacks for the crèche based in the Women’s Community Project.

Donations of good quality clothing, small items of furniture and electrical goods and bric a brac are always gratefully received. The group also needs shop volunteers and people with good with social networking skills who could help with Facebook and Twitter. Call Vonny on 07539 883657.
