Yorkshire Coast Homes has provided 16 new affordable homes in Eastfield and Barrowcliff and is also backing a scheme to promote independent living.

The housing provider took over seven properties adjacent to Ridgeway in Eastfield on May 2 and these homes have now been renamed as 1-7 Oak Lane.

A further nine bungalows, located next to the row of shops on Wreyfield Drive in Barrowcliff, followed on May 16 and these are now named 1-9 Billow Drive.

The bulk of a much larger 31-property site at Manham Hill in Eastfield, which will be known as Wheatfields Court, should be ready for handover in August, with the final section being completed in October.

Chief executive Shaun Tymon said: “The completion of these sixteen new homes marks once again the excellent working partnership that YCH enjoys with Scarborough Borough Council. Our ongoing development strategy also illustrates a shared commitment to meet the growing need for more good quality affordable housing across the borough.”

The housing provider’s Coastcall team is also hosting a series of events in Scarborough for National Independent Living Week, which gets under way on Monday.

Coastcall is a 24-hour support service that enables older, disabled or vulnerable people to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible by providing a round-the-clock support and emergency response facility.

On Monday, the team will host two show-and-tell style sessions in the Yorkshire Coast Homes boardroom at Brook House, Gladstone Road.

The morning session will be open to staff only, while the afternoon session will be open to representatives of local groups and organisations who may be interested in the Coastcall system.

On Tuesday, representatives will be manning a stall at Sainsbury’s from 10am to 2pm, where they will be demonstrating the system and handing out goodies.

Wednesday will see The Coastcall team and their roadshow stall at The Street, in Scarborough, between 10am and noon. There will also be a display at the main entrance at Scarborough Hospital from noon to 4pm.

The week of events will draw to a close on Friday when The Coastcall Roadshow team will spend the morning outside the Brunswick Centre in Scarborough town centre, carrying out demonstrations and hosting information sessions for shoppers.
