Two young people are starting the New Year with a new career thanks to a successful employment scheme in Scarborough.

Carina Drayton and David Ambury (pictured) have both secured jobs at Sainsbury’s thanks to partnership working between a number of agencies.

During autumn 2013, Jobcentre Plus joined forces with the Institute for Grocery Distribution to showcase the scale and diversity of the food industry to unemployed 16 to 24 year olds.

Training and support was offered, along with an insight into recruitment processes and apprenticeship schemes.

The aim was for 150 employers across the country to support the initiative and provide in excess of 10,000 opportunities for young people.

Morrisons in Scarborough was one of many supermarkets who took part in the scheme, giving young people the chance of a three-day work placement, covering all aspects of the company.

Michelle Hollowell of Morrisons said: “It was brilliant to work alongside the local Jobcentre Plus office and offer young people the chance of a work placement to give them an insight of working in the food industry, specifically a supermarket.

“For them to use this experience and be successful in gaining work within the industry is an excellent result.”

Working alongside the Jobcentre, three candidates - including Carina and David - were selected and were successful in completing the placement.

Carina, of Crossgates, said: “The placement was excellent. I was treated as an employee and it gave me a taste of work within the food industry. I really enjoyed it.”

David added: “The food industry wasn’t really an area I’d thought of working in, but the placement at Morrison’s was excellent and I really enjoyed it.

“After the placement I knew it was an area I would enjoy to work in. I was grateful to both Alex and Bron at the job centre and Morrisons for giving me the opportunity.”

Carina and David were then referred to Claire Robinson of Scarborough Jobmatch, who informed them of a recruitment event with Sainsbury’s.

Both applicants were successful in gaining employment with the company and couldn’t be happier.

Carina said: “I absolutely love it! I would like to thank Jobcentre Plus, Morrisons, Scarborough Jobmatch and ultimately Sainsbury’s for believing in me and helping me gain employment. It really has changed my life.”

Claire Robinson of Scarborough Jobmatch said: “It has been fantastic to see real success stories come out of the partnership - together we’ve been able to give them the opportunities they deserve.”
