New York spot for town’s play

A PRODUCTION written by Scarborough playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn has hit New York’s Broadway.

Neighbourhood Watch, which was performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, is showing at the 59E59 Theatre in Manhattan for a four-week run.

The eight-strong cast and company were invited to perform as part of the Brits Off Broadway festival, which highlights the country’s most innovative theatre work.

Sir Alan, who is in New York to promote the play, which is his 75th production, added: “It is a terrific morale boost.

“When we play in Scarborough, they like to downgrade us. ‘If you’re that good, what are you doing here?’, they say.

“And when you go to New York and get the sort of acclamation we’ve had, you know you’re playing in the big league with the big hitters.”

Neighbourhood Watch - which focuses on a brother and sister’s attempts to keep law and order in their housing estate - will also tour the UK next year.
