Pop sensation Olly Murs is set to wow the crowds at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre at a sold-out concert on Sunday.
It was announced earlier this week that Diana Vickers will be the special guest at the much-anticipated show.
The 20-year-old from Blackburn made it to the semi-final stage of the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008 and is renowned for her raspy yet powerful vocals and her kooky image.
In 2010 her debut studio album, Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree, reached number one in the official UK album charts.
She has also enjoyed three top-40 singles, with Once – a track from her first album – also reaching top spot.
Janet Deacon, area director for Welcome to Yorkshire which is supporting this summer’s programme at the theatre, said: “Diana has a unique voice and a fantastic stage presence – we’re delighted to confirm she will be the special guest.”
Tickets for Olly Murs – who was runner-up in the sixth series of The X Factor – went on sale in March and were sold out within a matter of weeks.
Mrs Deacon said: “Everyone is really excited about it. Olly has been Tweeting that he’s never been to Scarborough before and he’s really looking forward to it.
“With it being a sell out, I think the atmosphere will be amazing and the audience will be a real mixture of ages.”
Scarborough Council’s strategic director, David Archer, said: “I’m sure there will be an amazing atmosphere in the Open Air Theatre on Sunday and I’m delighted Diana Vickers has been added to the bill.”
Since its re-opening in 2010 after a £3.5 million refurbishment, the giant stage on the Open Air Theatre lake has seen artists as diverse as Dame Kiri Ti-Kanawa, Elton John and urban chart toppers N-Dubz perform.
This year, audiences have already been dazzled by legendary American singer Dionne Warwick and star of stage and screen, John Barrowman.
On August 4, Russell Watson, the biggest-selling UK classical artist, comes to thet heatre, with tickets still on sale via ticketmaster.co.uk, the Escape to The Sands offices in Peasholm Gap, Scarborough, local tourist information centres, and the Scarborough Tourism Bureau.
Just two weeks later on 18 August, a host of performers from the The Voice UK 2012, Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor will take to the stage for a ‘Big Night Out’, including Amelia Lily, The Risk, Loveable Rogues, The Mend, Max Milner, Jaz Ellington and Martyn Crofts with the voice of The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, Peter Dickson, also featuring.
‘Big Night Out’ tickets are currently on sale at a special early bird reduced rate of £20 for tickets bought in July, rising to the full price of £24 in August, with 2,500 tickets for the best seats available locally though the Escape to the Sands offices in Scarborough’s North Bay where a minimal £1 booking fee is being charged; and through ticketmaster.co.uk where a normal booking fee applies.
Under-14s who want to buy tickets from the Escape to the Sands offices, must be accompanied by an adult.
A week later, on Saturday August 25, one of the biggest boybands in the world, JLS, will perform at the Open Air Theatre with only a small number of tickets remaining.
In addition to the main events at the theatre, free afternoon entertainment will be staged throughout the summer holidays in what is being billed as family-orientated variety.
