Letter: Soldier's relics belong with his family
Each button commemorates a soldier who died in the Battle of the Somme. Mine commemorates Lance Corporal David Eardley who died on September 18, 1916, aged 23 (the same age as my son). Over 1,500 soldiers died on that day.
The reason for writing is that I feel the button and certificate should go to his relatives and, as he enlisted in Scarborough according to records, felt you might be able to help in contacting them. Hopefully someone will have his details in their family tree. I can only assume that he was from the Scarborough area though, and he joined the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own). His service number was 18263. His grave is at the Thiepval Memorial.
I hope you are able to help in this matter. My details for contact are email [email protected] or mobile 07762 268411.
