Pancake Day traditions set to draw in crowds

Shrove Tuesday falls on February 28 this year, with special events planned in South Bay.

The ringing of the Pancake Ball will happen at 1pm near the lifeboat station, instead of the usual venue of North Street.

Doing the honours will be Scarborough’s mayor, Cllr Simon Green along with mayoress Val Green.

The town crier David Birdsall will also be on hand to announce the start of the celebrations.

The annual fancy dress Pancake Race, organised by Scarborough Council and Yorkshire Coast Radio, will be held at in Foreshore Road this year instead of its usual venue of Aberdeen Walk. People wanting to take part can arrive and sign up from noon ready for a 1pm start.

This year’s fancy dress theme is “Pancakes Of The World” and each duo will not only be judged on their speed but also on their fancy dress, pancake flipping technique and how much pancake they have left in their pan after tackling the obstacle course.

The worthy winners will take home the much coveted “Golden Frying Pan”.

In addition to this annual prize, Tesco will also be awarding the winning duo a £25 voucher each with the team placing 2nd each receiving a £15 voucher each and the team placing 3rd receiving a £10 voucher each.
