People in Scarborough are being urged to guard against sneak-in thieves by remaining vigilant at all times.

Officers have seen a slight increase in offences of this nature in the area recently and are advising people to bear their home security in mind.

Thieves are opportunistic and on the look out for easy chances to steal, if you make life difficult for them they are far less likely to target your home.

Some simple crime prevention steps such as keeping windows and doors locked at all times, hiding valuable items from view and reporting suspicious people or vehicles can go a long way towards deterring thieves.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your area contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 1 – and pass information to the Force Control Room.

If you prefer not to give your name, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
