Pier sail to Harbour Cup win

Pier put their foot on the gas after a quiet first half and marched to a comfortable 5-0 victory that placed the Harbour Cup in their grasp to join the Division One championship, the District Cup and the North Riding FA Saturday Challenge Cup.

Seamer clearly had designs on landing some of their own silverware, as they looked positive in the opening minutes of the game.

The first action, to further warm a sun-drenched Thornton-le-Dale crowd, was created by Pier though, as the sprightly Martin Cooper drilled just over the Seamer bar.

Adam Morris then flung himself across his goal to tip away Gary Thomas' low drive.

Seamer were without doubt a menace though and Pier were thankful to defender Shaun Dodson who had to react quickly to hack an effort off his own line.

Pier continued to grow into the tie though and the evergreen Paul Provins should have given them the lead after 20 minutes.

The striker was picked out unmarked just two yards from goal, but he was caught off-guard and his header looped up against the bar and bounced to safety.

Seamer had a useful opportunity of their own when Luke Delve's shot ricocheted off the legs of Pier keeper Chris Ferrey, who may or may not have known anything about what looked to be a great save.

Cooper shuddered the bar right on the half-time whistle, but the deadlock was still to be broken when the game moved into the second half.

It didn't take Pier long to shatter the Seamer dreams when the new period got underway.

Cooper's free-kick smacked against the wall with the half just minutes old, and the rebound fell to Thomas, who volleyed it delightfully into the back of the net.

Provins then lobbed wide of the Seamer goal with just Morris to beat, but it didn't take the frontman long to make amends.

After a sharp break down the left, he showed the peace of mind to take his time before rolling the ball into the net.

The action was then interrupted by what looked to be two nasty injuries.

Seamer's Gary Lawton seemed to land badly after jumping for the ball with keeper Ferrey and he was taken off to hospital with what looked to be damaged ribs.

Then, a minute later, Mikey Pickering felt the force of an Adie Blake challenge and had to limp off the field.

This break in play didn't deter Pier's attacking verve, as Provins turned provider for Logan to make it three with an accomplished finish.

There was more to come as well, when sub Chris Weetman flicked the ball into the path of Logan and the striker made no mistake.

The energetic Weetman then sealed the win and Pier's fourth trophy when he sprinted onto a Logan through ball and clinically beat a frustrated Morris.
