SCARBOROUGH residents are being encouraged to nominate inspirational people to be London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games is looking for 8,000 residents from across the UK to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay, which runs for 70 days between May 19 and July 27 next year. Residents have until June 29 this year to make their nominations.
Nominees can be from all walks of life, but the committee is looking for ‘truly incredible individuals whose personal stories will inspire millions of people watching the Olympic Torch Relay – in their community, across the UK and around the world’.
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and regeneration, said: “Although we don’t yet know the specific routes the Olympic Torch is taking, three of the overnight stops that have been announced to date, Middlesbrough, Hull and York, are within easy travelling time of our borough and therefore we hope that people will be inspired to get involved and nominate many worthy individuals to showcase the very best of our area.”
The dates of the overnight stops closest to the borough are June 17 in Middlesbrough, June 18 in Hull and June 19 in York.
