Tony Hadley, Jason Donovan and Rick Astley know a thing or two about topping the charts around the globe - and now they are on their way to Scarborough to lead a “pop Tour de Force” at the resort’s Open Air Theatre.
Just days after he left the Australian jungle in “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here”, it is announced that Spandau Ballet frontman Tony will join Aussie heart-throb Jason and soulful singer-songwriter Rick topping the bill for what promises to be a hit-packed party night at Europe’s largest open air theatre on Saturday August 6.
The chart-topping trio are the first acts to be confirmed for the ‘Legends of Pop’ event which will be hosted by DJ and popstar Pat Sharp and is part of a wonderful summer of live music at Scarborough OAT.
British soul superstars Simply Red, former The Beautiful South stars Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, rock legends Status Quo and West End king Alfie Boe have already been unveiled by promoters Cuffe and Taylor who are announcing a different headliner every day this week.
Tickets for the Legends of Pop event on August 6 go on sale at 9am Monday December 14.
Peter Taylor, director of Cuffe and Taylor, who are presenting Scarborough OAT’s 2016 programme, said: “The thirst for 80s and 90s music is so strong and the reason is audiences are assured of a hit-packed night of live music and fun with their friends and family.
“Tony, Jason and Rick are quite simply a pop Tour de Force and we are so delighted they, together with host Pat Sharp, are the first acts to be confirmed for our ‘Legends of Pop’ event at Scarborough OAT. It’s guaranteed to be one of the biggest party nights of the year!”
Main headliner Tony Hadley is rightly regarded as one of pop music’s greatest vocalists.
As part of pioneering New Romantic flag bearers Spandau Ballet, he has had numerous hits around the world such as Gold, Lifeline, Through the Barricades and the international number one True. He has now toured the world as a solo star for more than 20 years.
Pop icon Rick Astley has sold more than 19 million records in a near-30-year career. His 1987 debut single Never Gonna Give You Up reached Number 1 in 17 countries followed by eight consecutive Top 10 UK hits. Rick has just announced a full UK Tour for March and April 2016 to coincide with the release of his new album due for release later in 2016.
Jason Donovan shot to fame in the late 1980s when he was cast as Scott Robinson in Neighbours. He gained four UK number 1 singles – Especially for You (with Kylie Minogue), Too Many Broken Hearts, Sealed with a Kiss and Any Dream Will Do from his critically-acclaimed performance in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Jason has appeared in a number of top stage productions including The Rocky Horror Show. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and came runner-up in BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2011.
Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Borough Council cabinet member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “Back by popular demand, this is a superb 80s and 90s line up, headlined by the brilliantly talented Tony Hadley.
“Millions of TV viewers have had the pleasure of watching Tony Hadley on I’m A Celebrity over the past few weeks and now they will be able to see him live along with his fellow pop celebrities.
“Rest assured, they will receive a red carpet welcome here on the Yorkshire coast.”
