PRIMARY school pupils have said an unexpected Merry Fishmas to a generous local chippy.

Ramshill Fisheries, in Ramshill Road, provided 80 meals free of charge to St Martin’s School, in Holbeck Hill, as a Christmas treat to children.

The gesture was returned when a deluge of cards, thanking the shop’s staff and owners, flooded through the chippy’s doors.

Part-owner Nigel Hodgkins said: “We found out last year that the parent-teacher association paid for the meal for a Christmas party themselves.

“They approached us and asked us if we could give them a good deal, but we decided to do it for free so they’ve got more in their kitty.

“Last year we got a nice thank you but we did the same this year and received all these cards. It was really nice, it’s really touched us to be honest.

“Some of the kids wrote some really amusing things. One put down that our chips are better than at McDonalds!

“They had clearly put a lot of thought and effort in to what they had done.”

The cards are now brightening up the shop, which has been open for just over a year.
