The RNLI runs the lifeguard service in North Yorkshire on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council. RNLI divisional lLifeguard manager Chris Ward said they’re hoping that good weather will ensure a happy and busy summer on all the beaches.

He said: ‘All of the RNLI’s lifeguards have spent the last month honing their lifesaving skills and first aid abilities and are now looking forward to the service becoming operational on the beaches.

‘We are also pleased to be extending our service to Sandsend, which is a northerly facing beach that picks up changing sea conditions very quickly. The introduction of our patrols will ensure that the families, walkers and artists who regularly visit the beach can now do so with extra peace of mind.”

Andrew Williams, Scarborough Borough Council’s leisure manager added: “Our partnership to deliver a lifeguard service with the RNLI throughout the summer has been a huge success since we introduced it in 2009 and we are delighted that the service has been extended to Sandsend this year.

“The lifeguards are a vital part of helping to keep our beaches safe for the many thousands of visitors that come to the North Yorkshire coast every year.”
