Councillors have voted to remove Jimmy Savile’s name from the list of Honorary Freemen of the Borough which is currently displayed in Scarborough Town Hall.
The decision was following a proposal from the leader of Scarborough Council, Cllr Tom Fox, in the wake recent press articles and TV coverage of the scandal surrounding the former entertainer and alleged serial predatory sexual offender.
Cllr Fox told fellow councillors that it was a “very sensitive issue” which had been considered very carefully.
He said that Savile’s behaviour could only be described as “grotesque and obscene” which was likely to be substantiated following recent statements by the Metropolitan Police which had dropped the word “alleged” from the allegations.
He said: “I wish to put the motion that’s before you now – that Jimmy Savile’s name be removed immediately from the honours board.”
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Derek Bastiman.
The proposal also extended Scarborough Council’s heartfelt support and acknowledge the courage shown by those who had come forward having suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of the alleged serial predatory sexual offender Savile.
Cllr Fox added that he empathised with members of Savile’s family who were unaware of the allegations or the disgraced star’s actions.
