FLAMINGO Land Zoo is celebrating the birth of a special new arrival.
Staff at the zoo, near Malton, witnessed the birth of the endangered Rothschild giraffe in the early hours of Friday. The “little” one currently stands 6ft tall.
The success is the result of eight years of planning and hard work which has included nine different giraffe transfers, including moving animals from zoos in Holland and Germany.
Spokesman Helen Leach said: “The baby stood up within an hour, and took its first steps, watched by proud parents Joyce and George, as well as two other herd members Mylene and Lizzie.”
With less than 670 individuals remaining in the wild the Rothschild’s giraffe is more endangered than African elephants and chimpanzees.
