Scarborough’s mayor and mayoress are setting off today on a 200-mile charity bike ride around the borough.
Andrew and Sue Backhouse, along with 40 supporters, are taking on the event titled “Ride the BoS - conquer the elements cycle challenge”.
McCain Foods has been named main sponsor of the four-day event, which will involve 14,000ft of climbing.
It is also being sponsored by EDSBikes, Welcome to Yorkshire and Adverset Media Solutions.
The ride has been developed to cement the legacy of Andrew and Sue’s mayoral year.
They are hoping to establish an annual event and promote well-known cycle routes to help locals and visitors appreciate the whole Borough of Scarborough.
McCain Foods has three employees taking part in the ride, reliability engineer, Julian Wrigglesworth, services operator, Kevin Allen, and engineering contractor, John Oram – all of whom have over 20 years riding experience.
Participants are seeking sponsorship ahead of the event, with donations going to both the Mayor and Mayoress’ chosen charities and causes close to the heart of each cyclist – which for McCain’s riders are St Catherine’s Hospice, Cancer Research UK and the burns research unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
