Scarborough-born Downton Abbey actress Penelope Wilton has been made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Penelope Wilton, who spent her early life in the town, is best known for her roles as Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey, Ann in Ever Decreasing Circles and Mum Barbara in the film Shaun of the Dead.

She also plays the Queen in the forthcoming Steven Spielberg adaption of Roald Dahl's The BFG.

She was honoured for her services to Drama.
