Men across Scarborough are being encouraged to bin their razors and grow moustaches as part of a global initiative to raise funds and awareness of men’s health.

The Movember scheme challenges men to refrain from shaving their top lip for the duration of November.

The sprouting moustaches are to act as a visual stimulus for raising awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancers, while sponsorship raises funds for cancer charities.

This year a team of Mo Bros - the name given to Movember participants - from Scarborough are hoping to unite the town in a joint effort of support.

With support from The Scarborough News and Itis Itis, the Scarborough Mo Bros will be launched officially on Wednesday, October 31 at Itis Itis in Castle Road.

Movember is open to men of all ages, whether they want to join as team through a work place or sporting team, or individually. Nick Borthwick, one of the founders of Scarborough Mo Bros, said: “Movember has been going a while but I though this year it would be really great if we could get a Scarborough wide campaign going.

“Every year I see the Race for Life, which is a wonderful event raising loads of money in support of women’s cancer, but I get a little bit jealous there isn’t something for the men.

“While Movember is a very light hearted campaign, it still fulfills the important fundamentals of raising money and awareness. If this help guys to check themselves out, and know what they need to be looking for then that is great.

“We are really looking forward to launching it and hope to get lots of people involved.”

The launch night will see all Mo Bros photographed with cleanly shaven faces ahead of Movember. There will also be live entertainment, and a men’s health advisor to give information and answer any question.

All Scarborough Mo Bros are asked to officially register online prior to the launch event at www.movember.com.

At the end of November a Movember Party Night will be held at Itis Itis where participants can who off their Mo’s with their fellow Bros. As well as final photos the event will feature competition prizes including the Tom Selleck award for the bushiest moustache, and the Best Effort award. There will also be live music from East Coast Vegabonds and host of fundraising activities.
