A man has been brought to safety by Scarborough police after he climbed on top of the safety barrier on Valley Bridge in the town.
The man, who is in his twenties, refused to come down from the bridge and specially trained police officers were sent to the scene to help bring him to safety.
The incident was reported to the police at 5.30pm earlier today and was brought to a safe conclusion at around 8.30pm.
Both Valley Bridge and the road below were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Local diversions were put in place for pedestrians and motorists and police officers have thanked members of the public for their cooperation and understanding while the incident was ongoing.
The man was not injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution, he was arrested under section 136 of the mental health act and taken into police custody.
