WOMEN of all ages are being encouraged to sign up for this year’s Race for Life event in Scarborough.
The huge annual fundraiser will take place this year on Sunday May 13, starting at the Sea Life Centre.
Last year was the first time the event had been held in North Bay, after originally being up at Oliver’s Mount.
Organisers say that feedback about the new route was fantastic and that they’re looking forward to another successful event.
Olivia Laking, area events manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “People loved the fact they were running along the seafront and it was really nice for spectators too.
“The weather wasn’t great, but it certainly didn’t put anybody off!
“We’re expecting a good turnout again. We had lots of great feedback after last year and everyone really enjoyed it.”
She added that people have already started to register for the event, both online and by telelphone.
Mrs Laking explained that until the end of September last year, participants could register for a reduced entry fee of £10.
She said: “The uptake on the early registration offer was very good and we’ve also had a lot of people signing up since then.
“We don’t have exact numbers as yet, but we think the turnout will be good again.
“We have lots of regulars who take part year after year.”
Last year 1,451 women and girls took part in the all-female fundraiser.
The new route took participants past the Open Air Theatre, past the Sands Complex, along Royal Albert Drive as far as Hairy Bob’s Cave, back along the drive and along the promenade in front of the chalets, finishing at the Sea Life Centre.
The course is 5K or around three miles long.
Before the big day organisers came to Scarborough and lit the lighthouse pink with special floodlighting.
Pink is the signature colour of Race for Life and most participants wear pink, with a number of people opting for fancy dress.
Many groups also took part, with friends, family and work colleagues teaming up together.
There was even a Zumba class who shook and shimmied their way around the course.
Registration for this year’s event is now open and can be found at www.raceforlife.org or call 0871 641 1111.
The entry fee is £14.99 per adult and £10 for under 16s.
