Residents in a Scarborough street were shocked to see a 2ft by 2ft “sink hole” open up outside their home.
The hole in the road appeared in Belvedere Place at around 2pm today.
The road was closed off and teams from North Yorkshire County Council’s highways department were sent to the scene to investigate.
Resident Joe Hilton, who has lived in the street for two years, said: “I was shocked - there’s another section further up that looks like it’s sinking too.
“The paths are crumbling up here and the road surface is breaking up.
“I’m glad highways have come out - it could be a blessing in disguise.”
His partner Marie Fretwell added: “I’d just walked across that stretch of road with the kids earlier, which is a bit of a scary thought now.
“One of us could have fallen so it was a lucky escape.
“It seemed to open up quickly - it was about six inches when I first saw it. Then it just dropped down.”
