Scarborough Hospital’s Snowdrop Appeal has passed the £20,000 mark - with the help of some kind-hearted schoolchildren.

Since the appeal for a maternity bereavement suite began in June, it has attracted huge support from people in Scarborough and beyond.

This latest donation from St Augustine’s School has helped the appeal reach an amazing milestone in its drive to reach £120,000.

Hospital fundraiser Maya Richardson said she was thrilled with the response and that the amount raised by St Augustine’s was “amazing”.

She added: “The total so far of £20,000 is a fantastic amount to have risen in just four months and the support has been wonderful.

“People have really got behind it and organised various events including a 12-hour ironing challenge by Wonkey McDonky, coffee mornings, karaoke evenings and sponsored walks.”

Maya is now launching the Snowdrop Ball on Saturday March 1, 2014, at The Royal Hotel in Scarborough.

Promising to be a highlight of the fundraising calendar, the evening will start with a drinks reception, followed by a three-course meal and entertainment from local band Soul Rida along with a silent auction and a casino.

Tickets are £40 and can be booked by calling Maya in fundraising on (01723) 236210 or email maya.richardson@york.nhs.uk.

Maya explained that Scarborough’s maternity unit currently has no dedicated facilities to look after parents in these sad circumstances and they’re often amongst parents with healthy babies.

Maternity matron, Freya Oliver said: “We would like to create a special suite with the help and advice from bereaved parents who have sadly had to deal with such devastating news.

“The new facilities will include a sleeping area, lounge and bathroom, where parents and families can be together to comfort and support each other during such a difficult time.”

People are encouraged to get involved in the campaign by organising a fundraising event in their workplace, school, college or with a group of friends.

Maya is available to offer advice and support about planning your event.
