A SCARBOROUGH woman has launched a special campaign to raise £10,000 to mark 10 years since she had a heart transplant.
Amelia Scholey, of Gladstone Street, is aiming to raise the funds by August 2012 for two life-saving charities – the British Heart Foundation and Live Life then Give Life.
The campaign also aims to promote the importance of organ donation.
The 23-year-old, who works in the M&S coffee shop in Scarborough, said: “It’s really exciting and I’ve had lots of support already.
“It’s been nearly 10 years and I just wanted to give something back. I want to show people what giving the gift of life can do.
“I’m still on medication and have regular check-ups, but I can live a full and normal life.”
When Amelia was just a baby her father died of a heart-related problem and when she was 14 her brother died suddenly due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Tests showed that Amelia also had heart disease and in June 2002 she was put on a waiting list for a new heart.
Two months later she was lucky enough to receive the organ, but unfortunately the heart she received didn’t beat.
A machine kept Amelia alive until she received another heart through the emergency transplant list.
Amelia’s Campaign is now up and running on Facebook and Twitter and the first fundraising event – a Speed Dating night – will take place on Sunday, the day before Valentine’s Day.
It will be held at the Old Vic pub in Westborough with registration from 7pm. Tickets are available from the pub and cost £5, £4 for students or £2 for a non-participation ticket.
The former Raincliffe and Gladstone Road pupil, who is also a Guide leader, said: “We’re looking forward to the event and are appealing for more men to come forward if possible, as at the moment we have more women signed up!”
Other fundraising events in the pipeline include a ball, variety show and family fun day.
Amelia explained that heart disease is still the UK’s biggest killer and 10,000 people in the UK are currently in need of a transplant.
Of these, 1,000 people each year – three a day – will die waiting as there are not enough organs available.
While 96 per cent of us would take an organ, only 27 per cent have signed the organ donor register.
Amelia added that the British Heart Foundation saves lives every day by investing in pioneering research, supporting and caring for heart patients and providing vital information to help people reduce their own risk of dying prematurely from a heart-related disease.
Live Life then Give Life is an award-winning organ donation awareness charity which exists to improve education and awareness of organ donation and to fund projects that increase the numbers of successful transplants in the UK.
She said: “I’m hoping we can raise as much money for these charities as possible.”
