A NEW support group aimed at helping ex-service personnel is up and running in Scarborough.
Scarborough Veterans’ Support Group meets at the Rainbow Centre and parish rooms, Auborough Street, every Monday (except Boxing Day) from 6pm to 8pm.
It is open to anyone who has served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces or Reserves, or anyone who knows somebody struggling to adjust to “civvy street”.
A spokesperson said: “We hope this will be the start of a comprehensive support network for Scarborough and the surrounding districts and are keen to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved.
“The idea is that once the real ‘need’ has been established, the service can be developed accordingly.
“Currently the group meets for a brew and a chat to support each other, at the same time putting forward ideas for the development of the group.”
Organisers appreciate it isn’t easy to attend a new group, especially when discussing issues such as post traumatic stress, depression or anxiety.
The intention is for the group to be led by the veterans themselves, so that people attending fully understand each others’ experiences.
