Vikki Welsh, 17, the last of five protesters who had climbed the tree in a bid to prevent North Yorkshire County Council from felling it, was finally persuaded to climb down at 10.10am and the chainsaws moved in within minutes.

A distraught and tearful Vikki, known as Beech Nut, said: “We have got to accept that there is nothing more we can do for this particular tree.”
