TWO Scarborough carers have reached the regional finals of a prestigious competition nicknamed the “social care Oscars”.

Care home supervisor Jean Smith and care manager Kate Hamilton will both attend a glittering event for the Great Yorkshire and Humberside Care Awards next month.

Jean, who is based at St Cecilia’s care home in Stepney Road, has been shortlisted in the Care Worker category and was nominated by her manager Jo Edmond – herself a former award winner in the competition.

Jo said: “In a challenging and stressful environment, Jean retains a calm, happy attitude that puts residents and colleagues instantly at ease. To many, Jean is the face of St Cecilia’s, a familiar figure for the residents and their families.”

Kate, who is based at Eastfield House in Eastway, Eastfield, is a finalist in the Care Manager category and was nominated by colleague Dale Nichol. He said clients always were her top priority but she also had time to look after her team.
