Scarborough’s Operation Christmas Child Christmas Shoebox collection will be launched at Queen Street Methodist Church on Saturday.
A shoebox Family Fun Day will be held from 9.30 to 1pm. The aim will be to cover and fill 200 Christmas Shoeboxes for needy children in Romania.
The activities will continue at the church on Sunday October 27 when there will be a Shoebox Family Service at 10.30am. Everyone will be very welcome to come to these events.
Last year approximately 5,750 Christmas Shoeboxes were sent from our area to children in the Ukraine where there is extreme poverty. This year the aim is to send 6,000 shoeboxes.
Organiser Ros Dyson said: “We had a really good response last year. We had 50 volunteers helping out at the warehouse and everyone’s really keen to help again. We’ve got high expectations and everyone is looking forward to it.”
More information about how to pack your shoebox and what kind of gifts to include is available at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk
There are also leaflets available at the various drop-off points in Scarborough, which include: Chapman’s funeral directors in Auborough Street, Touch of Glass in Newborough, Shoezone in Westborough, Irton Garden Centre and Scarborough Sofa Beds in Falsgrave Road. Shoeboxes need to be dropped off ideally by mid November, as collections will take place until the end of November.
