A 15-year-old girl has been killed in a car accident on a main road near Scarborough.
The teenager from Pickering was pronounced dead at the scene.
She died when a blue Vauxhall Corsa, which she was travelling in as a passenger, came off the A170 between Ebberston and Snainton and overturned.
Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The accident happened on Saturday at 6.30pm, a quarter of a mile from Chris Hodgson’s Car Showroom, near Welldale Farm.
The car had been travelling in the direction of Scarborough.
The 18-year-old driver of the Corsa was taken to Scarborough Hospital and was treated for minor injuries.
He was arrested by police after he was discharged yesterday morning.
A driver of a white Ford Fiesta, 21, from Kirkbymoorside, was arrested at the scene of the incident.
Police said yesterday he was helping them with their inquiries.
Both drivers are also from Pickering. A local resident who witnessed the aftermath of the accident said: “I went down to see what was happening and I could see straight away that it was fairly serious.
“There were so many police cars, fire engines and ambulances. You couldn’t move for them. It was terrible. I saw the car on the road on its roof, facing back towards Ebberston. The emergency services were still there at quarter to midnight.”
Police have made an urgent appeal for any witnesses to get in touch.
Traffic Sergeant Neil Campbell, of North Yorkshire Police’s road policing group, said: “It is vital to the investigation that anyone who witnessed the collision gets in touch with the police immediately.
“I am particularly interested in speaking to anyone who saw the blue Vauxhall Corsa prior to the collision or a white Ford Fiesta which was travelling in company with it.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Traffic Sergeant Campbell or Traffic Constable Dave Williamson, of the road policing group, on 0845 6060247, quoting reference number NYP-08012011-0392.
