A MOTORIST had a lucky escape yesterday after ploughing through a railway level crossing.

The driver smashed into the barrier on the A165 at the Muston level crossing as it dropped in position to warn drivers of the arrival of a train.

Police have confirmed the driver did not stop at the scene.

The road was closed at around 9.30am as drivers travelling from the Hunmanby side of the barrier couldn’t cross the line, leaving a huge tailback of cars and trucks strewn along the busy route.

A bus full of schoolchildren was also caught up in the incident and was the first vehicle to arrive at the scene after the collision took place.

Police closed the road at the Scarborough Road roundabout for motorists travelling from Scarborough and diverted them through Filey.

Officers made the area safe as engineers tended to the barrier, which had been locked in its position – complete with flashing lights – by the force of the impact.

The road was reopened around 11.30am.
