A full investigation is being carried out to determine the cause of a house fire where a 90-year-old man was found dead in Malton.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and North Yorkshire Police were called to the blaze in Fitzjohn Close, off Rainbow Lane in Malton, at around 7.50am this morning.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at about 7.45am today, to a report of a house fire on Fitzjohn Close in Malton.

"A 90-year-old man was found by firefighters inside the property. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Police and fire investigators will carry out a full examination of the property to determine how it started."

Three fire engines as well as police and an ambulance attended the scene earlier today.

Surround residents in Fitzjohn Close and Dickens Road were evacuated this morning and the road was close off - it has since been re-opened.
