Heartless vandals have ripped the lights from a Christmas tree outside St Mary’s Church in Cloughton.
Vicar Liz Kitching discovered the damage on Monday morning as she arrived at the church for morning prayer.
She said: “We think someone has tried to pinch them. Whoever did it must have done it at night and while the lights were switched on, which is wildly dangerous.”
The lights were donated by local electrician David Ross and the tree had been given by the Duchy of Lancaster.
They were put up and attached to the tree with plastic tags by church warden David Sadler.
The Revd Kitching said: “David is hoping he can do something with them and that the lights can be used again.
“My heart sank when I saw them because of all the work that had gone into it.”
She has also criticised the culprit for their “thoughtless and selfish” attitude, saying: “I personally don’t get it.
“There’s not enough sense of how the other person must feel.”
The Revd Kitching said David Sadler had sent her a message of support. He said: “We will not let a few vandals shake our spirit.
“Their attempt at destruction is like throwing a baked bean at a rhino.”
