Villages set to vie for New Year pulling power

A SERIES of traditional events are being held in and around Scarborough on New Year’s Day tomorrow.

The River Derwent will play host to the annual tug of war event in Ayton.

Last year the team representing the Ye Olde Forge Valley Inn brought the title back to the West after two quick victories over Ayton Sports Association.

The popular event, which attracts hundreds of spectators, will get under way at 11am.

The 20th annual New Year’s Dip will be held near the Lifeboat House in South Bay.

Participants can register on the day from 11.30am in the Scarborough Rowing Club bar area in Foreshore Road. All dippers must then assemble on the beach at 12.30pm.

Scarborough mayor Cllr John Blackburn will judge the fancy dress contest.

A New Year’s Day Concert featuring the Scarborough Spa Orchestra will take place in the Spa’s Grand Hall at 3pm.

Tickets are available from the Spa Box Office.
