Voters net cash for sailing club

A Filey-based community group is celebrating after local supporters helped it to win a share of an £82,000 pot of funding.

After making it through to the shortlisting stage of Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving Scheme, each group was profiled on the society’s website.

Members of the public were invited to vote for the most deserving groups – and Filey Sailing Club received enough public votes to make it into the top 164 winners.

Filey Sailing Club, established in 1951, offers a great location for people to enjoy the sport of sailing on the Yorkshire coast.

The club is run by a committee of volunteer members who work hard to introduce people to the sport and provide a safe place for everyone to enjoy it.

The club says that the £500 it has received will be used to introduce more young families into the sport.

It plans to niu equipment to aid the younger sailors in learning how to sail on the sea in a safe environment.

Now in its third year, Grassroots Giving awards £500 to each community group who has achieved a high enough proportion of the 30,000 votes cast in total.
