Organisers of one of Scarborough’s best-loved charity events are looking for new people to come forward and take over the reins.

Walk for Life will take place this year on Sunday March 22 and long-standing organisers Linda Tomczak and Theresa Hargreaves are set to step down after the event.

Linda told The Scarborough News: “It’s the last time we will be organising the event, but we don’t want it to disappear.

“I’ve been doing it for 19 years now and I think it’s time we had some new blood.

“We’ve both become busy with other things and we feel it’s time for somebody else to pick up the gauntlet and run with it.”

She added that they are happy to chat to people who may be interested in the role and hand over information on sponsor forms and other key factors.

Linda said: “I’ve loved it. Every year people stop me in the street and ask me about the walk and when it’s going to be held.

“So many people get so much benefit out of it. One organisation said to me that if it wasn’t for the Walk for Life, they wouldn’t have had any funds coming in that year.”

The walk, as ever, will be starting at 2pm at Peasholm Gap, with walkers making their way round Marine Drive and along South Bay to the Spa.

Participants are free to raise money for whatever charity they choose and sponsor forms are available from The Scarborough News office or from Linda on 07789 691863.

The walk first started in 1995 and was organised by Eileen Bosomworth, with Linda getting involved in 1997.

There have been different fancy dress themes over the years, with Superheroes chosen for this year’s event.

Every year the event raises around £10,000 for the walkers’ chosen charities, with hundreds of people of all ages taking part.

Linda is looking forward to another great walk this year and is encouraging people to get involved.

You can register on the day of the event, but people are encouraged to get their sponsor forms as early as possible.

And with it being Linda and Theresa’s last walk as organisers, they are hoping it will be a big success.

Linda said: “We’ll still be here to help, but it’s definitely time we got some new people in.

“People can ring me if they want to find out more and find out what is involved. It’s fairly basic really - the walkers look after their own sponsorship and we just facilitate it.”
