St Catherine’s Hospice has relaunched its Midnight Walk for 2014 as the Starlight Walk.
Organisers decided to start this year’s event, which will take place on Saturday September 13, at 10pm instead of midnight following feedback from participants.
Hospice fundraiser Penny Campbell explained: “People have been asking for an earlier start time for various reasons, such as shift work and the fact that the event takes place in term time.
“Some people have to be up the next day for work, so we thought a 10pm start time would suit more people.”
The popular event is now in its seventh year and has raised more than £300,000 for patient care since it began.
This year the walk will go back to its original 6.5-mile route, which starts at the hospice in Throxenby Lane and takes in Green Lane, Peasholm Gap, Marine Drive, Valley Road and Scalby Road, finishing at the hospice.
Last year the route was reversed, due to street lights being switched off as part of a pilot scheme, but this will not be an issue this year.
The event is being supported as always by the Harbour Bar, who provide bacon butties, hot drinks and ice cream to walkers at the halfway point.
A warm-up at the hospice will be provided by representatives from Compass Gym
Walker numbers are being sponsored by Galea Sunblinds and the route will be marshalled by Scarborough coastguard team members with representatives from St John Ambulance.
The optional fancy dress theme this year will be cops and robbers, with teams and individuals encouraged to get into the spirit by donning a memorable outfit.
Penny said: “We’re really grateful to everyone who supports this event and all the walkers who take part.
“We’re looking forward to it and anticipating another great night.
“There’s a real party atmosphere on the night and a community spirit with everyone coming together.”
Last year 580 walkers took part and the event raised around £40,000. If you would like to sign up, or find out more, please call Penny on (01723) 378406, email firstname.lastname@example.org or pick up a form at the Scarborough News reception in Aberdeen Walk.
