This morning, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway handed over the heritage line to re-enactors who turned back the clocks to over 70 years ago.

Thousands are expected to descend on the town for the biggest annual attraction on Ryedale district’s calendar, for the Railway in Wartime Weekend, which began today when NYMR managing director Philip Benham handed over Pickering Station, and the rest of the railway line, for the last time at the flag raising ceremony.

Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont stations will be transformed to tell the tales of different people and events during the “People’s War.”

Highlights in Pickering over the weekend include shows by Paul Harper, a cinema showing newsreel films from the 1940s, and displays such as Matthewson’s Garage, Joan’s wartime Hair Salon, ‘The Sidings Inn’ and GI Joe’s American Coffee Shop.

The wartime extravaganza will carry on throughout the entire town. Pickering Memorial Hall is again hosting its War Emporium while the Kirk Theatre will be showing performances of Carry On Britain tonight at 7.30pm, tomorrow at 7.30pm and Sunday at 6:30pm - limited tickets are still available for all three shows.

Pickering Showground will also be turning back the clocks to the 1940s with singers and dancers will parade the showground, vintage hair and beauty parlours will be set up for those wanting a full make over and there will be World War Two re-enactment battles.
