Whitby’s Swing Bridge is currently closed after it broke down in the early hours of this morning (2 June).
The bridge broke in the “open” position, leaving pedestrians and vehicles with a 3-mile detour.
Free shuttle buses have been put in place by Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) but the breakdown has taken place during the busy school half term holidays and has left many businesses fearing huge losses in income.
Cllr Ken Graham said: “Businesses on the Eastside could under no circumstances afford another bridge break down at this time of the year.”
Hydraulic and electrical engineers were immediately contacted by the Borough Council and are expected on site today.
